Cookie policy

This is Better.co.uk's cookie policy. Learn what cookies we use and how to block or remove them.

What this policy covers

This policy explains the cookies and similar technologies we use on Better.co.uk and how you control them. Where we say cookies, we mean cookies and anything that works like one, including pixels and tags in our pages, software development kits, local storage and session recording scripts. We also use pixels in our marketing emails to tell us whether an email has been opened. Those load only where you have agreed to receive marketing from us, and they stop when you unsubscribe, which you can do from any marketing email we send.

Our Privacy Notice explains more fully how we use personal information, the lawful bases we rely on and the rights you have.

When we ask for your consent

We show you a consent banner on your first visit. Until you choose, we set only what the law allows us to use without consent. We do not treat continued use of the website as consent, and refusing is as easy as accepting.

For our website, UK law lets us use three kinds of technology without asking, provided we tell you what they do and give you a simple, free way to object: those strictly necessary to provide the service you have asked for, those used only to collect statistics so we can improve our own service, and those used only to adapt how the site looks or works to your preferences. Everything else is set only if you consent.

What we use and why

Category

What it does

Consent

Strictly necessary

Signs you in, keeps your session secure, saves your application progress, prevents fraud, remembers your cookie choices, and runs live chat when you open it. The site will not work properly without these.

Not required

Statistical

Tells us how the site is used and where journeys fail, so we can improve it. If the information is shared with a provider for its own purposes, we ask you first.

Not required, but you can object

Appearance and functionality

Remembers choices you have made so the site behaves the way you expect.

Not required, but you can object

Advertising and cross-site tracking

Selects advertising for you on other websites and measures whether our advertising worked. The advertising platforms use this information for their own purposes as well as ours.

Required

Session recording and research

Records how you move through a page so we can find usability problems, and supports on-site surveys.

Required

Select Cookie Settings, in the footer of every page, for the current list of the individual technologies in each category, who provides them, what they are for and how long they last. We keep that list up to date as what we use changes.

Information you enter in forms

You use our website to apply for mortgages, secured loans, protection and insurance, so you give us information that is sensitive. Our recording and analytics tools are configured to mask what you type into fields containing financial details, identity information and anything you tell us about health, disability or support needs, and we test that configuration regularly. We do not use recordings to assess your application. If you would rather we did not record your session at all, decline that category in Cookie Settings. It will not affect the advice or service you receive.

Third parties

Some providers act only on our instructions and may not use the information for anything else. Others, particularly advertising platforms, use what they collect through our site for their own purposes too. We are responsible for asking you before their technologies load on our pages. What they then do with the information is covered by their own privacy information.

Some of these providers are based outside the United Kingdom. Where information is transferred, we rely on UK adequacy regulations, the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or another mechanism permitted by law, and carry out a transfer risk assessment where one is needed. You can ask us for details.

Changing your mind

You can change or withdraw your choices at any time in Cookie Settings, and it is as easy to do that as it was to consent. The change takes effect immediately: we stop setting the technologies you have declined, and we stop reading the ones already on your device for those purposes. Where the technology allows, we also expire them. Withdrawing does not undo processing that has already happened, and the files themselves may remain on your device. Your browser will let you delete them, and will let you block cookies generally, though blocking everything will stop parts of Better.co.uk working, including signing in.

Changes to this policy

We review this policy at least annually, and sooner if what we use or the law changes. The current version is always published on Better.co.uk with its version number and effective date. Where a change materially affects what we do, we will tell you and ask for your consent again where that is needed.
